Tulsa, Oklahoma—Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been declared a tornado-torn, with severe damage and widespread evacuations.
The storm, named the Narrows Creek by local officials, has already damaged over 50 buildings and destroyed more than 1,000 homes.
The National Weather Service said the storm is moving at an average speed of 20 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph and maximum gusts of 130 mph.
It is expected to produce tornadoes in Tulsa and across the state, and may create severe flooding.
The city of Tulsa has reported an estimated total of 1,900 confirmed fatalities, with another 7,500 injured, according to the Tulsa World.
The National Weather Services has confirmed the damage caused by the tornado as follows:• At least three people were killed in a fire at a Tulsa-area hotel.• Several homes in the city of Wagoner were destroyed, and a home in the Oklahoma City area was also destroyed.• At one time, one person was unaccounted for in the Wagoners community of St. John, Oklahoma.• A number of homes in Wagonertown, Oklahoma were destroyed and some businesses lost power.
The Associated Press reports:• The tornado made landfall at 11:37 a.m. local time (12:37 p.m ET) at the intersection of Interstate 35 and the I-35E bridge, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) east of Tulsa.• There were multiple reports of tornadoes, including the reported tornado that struck the intersection at the Wagenmakers shopping center.
Tulsans Mayor Steve Stenger said that the storm was so strong it damaged a truck with a tractor-trailer.
“We had a tractor trailer with damage to the front end and the rear of it,” he said.
“The front end of it was on fire.”
Tulsan National Weather Center meteorologist Tim Pyle said there were reports of lightning in the area, and it was raining.
The tornado touched down about 20 minutes after the tornado that hit the Wigan Creek neighborhood, where residents were on edge as the storm approached.
Toledo Mayor Pete Buttigieg said that it was the worst tornado that had hit the area since August.
“There is no way you could see this, this was a monster tornado, and this is just devastating,” he told CNN affiliate WKRC.
“It is devastating, it is just horrific.”
The tornado touched the city and caused several minor injuries, and several people were evacuated from a nearby home.
The mayor said there are no indications of fatalities.
